The topic of “short term rentals” appears to be heating up throughout Leelanau County again, appearing on the agendas of several of the county’s 11 township boards in just the past month.

The Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians is continuing to expand its economic development efforts beyond casino gaming and this week announced its acquisition of a steel fabrication firm in Charlevoix.

While no one has a crystal ball, professionals who have been selling homes in the county for decades have observations about what’s going on in the market and what to expect. Following as some of their thoughts:
Home sales dipped in ‘18
Every party ends. So when Leelanau County home sales in 2018 pulled back in both total volume and number of units sold, professionals in the business weren’t surprised.
Cedar reeling after bloody attack
The community of Cedar is still reeling from a violent assault last week in which one family member attacked her own kin.
Bailey K. Rosinski, 25, and her accomplice, Justin Bembeneck, 33, are held on $1 million bond, accused of multiple felonies including attempted murder.

Board nixes boat launch OK
Having sent officials of the Discovery Center back to the drawing board once already regarding the location of a small boat launch for disabled people on Discovery Pier, members of the Elmwood Township Board now want to see whoever did the drawings.

Study to look at impact of ‘wedding barn’
Elmwood Township has asked that an independent study be conducted to determine how and to what extent the presence of a controversial “wedding barn” on Lakeview Road has affected property values in the neighborhood.
Local BPA kids qualify for state competition
More than 20 county students will travel to Grand Rapids March 14-17 to participate in the state Business Professionals of America (BPA) state competition.
The students, from St. Mary and Suttons Bay School, shared a charter bus to regional competition Jan. 12 at Central Michigan University where they earned state berths.

LCN/Samaritans merge
There may be one more building in Lake Leelanau designated to help the needy.
Leelanau Christian Neighbors (LCN) and Samaritans’ Closet have merged to work as one human service agency.
Samaritans’ Closet sells clothing, furniture, bedding, kitchen items — donated by the public — from a site just south of M-204 on Co. Rd. 641 in Lake Leelanau.
Short-term rental ordinance eyed in Bingham Township
The Bingham Township Board will consider adopting a short-term rental ordinance following a presentation and extended public comment at its regular monthly meeting Monday evening.
The board agreed to ask staff planner Kathy Egan to bring ideas for a draft ordinance to the township board’s regular monthly meeting in March.
Deadline for shoe drive extended
