‘Dark sky’ resolution passes

Residents in the Village of Northport may enjoy the sight of more stars in the night skies going forward.

At its meeting last Thursday, Village of Northport Council approved a motion to adopt a Dark Sky Lighting Resolution, which should reduce light pollution in the village and render celestial bodies more visible at night.

A facilities update on the planned construction/remodeling project was given this week to the Leland Board of Education.

Superintendent Jason Stowe said the project, approved by voters last year, is now at the “final drawing” stage and is scheduled to go out for bids by the end of the month.

Church to offer ‘biblical walk’ program

St. Mary Church in Lake Leelanau will host a new religious education series, “A Biblical Walk through the Mass,” beginning Tuesday Jan. 22.

Jude Thompson, director of religious education, will facilitate the presentations during weekly meetings on Tuesdays through February.

Not much going on this time of year in our area. Snowbirds are gone and there are not many tourists coming here. Because much of our area is in the Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore, there are no snowmobiles or snowmobile trails to attract tourists. The permanent shanties are up on the lakes and the portable shanties show up most weekends.
