JANET SIEDER CARLSEN
Janet Sieder Carlsen passed away on December 5, 2018 at the age of 82. She died of complications of Alzheimer’s disease. Her death was peaceful and serene at Angela’s Hospice Center in Livonia, Michigan. She had around the clock care from the staff and her family.

STITES, David Kennedy – July 13, 1928-December 9, 2018 – Despite being born on Friday the Thirteenth on the eve of the Great Depression, David Kennedy Stites was a lucky man who was never greatly depressed.

George Compton Weeks, an admired and well respected political journalist, public official and author, died November 30, 2018 at the age of 86, at Munson Hospice House, Traverse City, Michigan, with his family by his side. George was born in Traverse City on August 1, 1932 to Donald C.

LORRAINE J. SHARNOWSKI
LAKE LEELANAU – Lorraine Joyce Sharnowski, 71, of Lake Leelanau, died Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2018 at her home.
Lorraine was born on April 19, 1947 in Buckley, the daughter of Clifford and Fern (Schuester) LeRoux. On Jan. 6, 1967, in Traverse City, she married Jack D. Sharnowski, who preceded her in death on Feb. 14, 2003.

Howard Berridge Tuthill
A celebration is planned for September in Leland for Howard Berridge Tuthill, Jr. who died Wednesday, Dec. 5 in Oak Park Heights, Minn.
He was 88.
Howard is survived by his wife of 62 years, Marcia; children Carey (Fred) Idema; Howard B. (Lisa) Tuthill, III; Tracy (Jamie) Engels; Libbie Tuthill and daughter-in-law Melissa Tuthill; 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren;

County Board meets goals for 2018
The Leelanau County Board of Commissioners appears to have met almost all the goals it set for itself earlier this year.
Notably, commissioners agreed that the county is in an “enviable position” financially in relation to other counties in Michigan; and the county’s new Substance Abuse Prevention Task Force is already being cited as a model for other counties to emulate.

Scott takes blame for failed talks
Glen Lake Superintendent Sander Scott fell on the sword this week, taking the blame for stalled contract talks during Monday’s monthly meeting.
The high school media center was filled to capacity with parents, teachers and retired teachers gathered seeking a resolution to contract talks that have fallen apart.

Interest huge in theatre’s future
There was a full house Tuesday at the Bay Theatre where more than 225 people gathered to discuss the future of the county’s only movie house.
Bahle Enterprises, owned by the Bahle family of Suttons Bay, announced last month the closing of the theatre that has been a center for the arts for more than 70 years.

Cuts made at S-B School, layoffs
If it looks to be too good to be true, it probably is.
Such is the case for Suttons Bay Public School whose anticipated $300,000 fund balance at the end of the 2018-19 school year, has turned into a deficit.

Village Council meeting rescheduled
The regular monthly meeting of the Suttons Bay Village Council scheduled for Monday, Dec. 17 was canceled.
The Village Council will hold a special meeting today, Thursday, Dec. 20, at 5 p.m. at the Village Hall, 420 N. Front Street.

SB DDA continues ferry discussion
The idea of establishing a ferry across Grand Traverse Bay between the villages of Elk Rapids and Suttons Bay continued to be a topic of serious discussion last week by members of Suttons Bay’s Downtown Development Authority (DDA).

At its regular monthly meeting last week, the Suttons Bay Township Board endorsed a slate of applicants for appointment and reappointment to various township boards and committees.

A total of 245 Glen Lake secondary students were listed on the honor roll for the first nine weeks of the 2018-19 school year.

G-L teachers/board OK contract
The Glen Lake Board of Education and Glen Lake Federation of Teachers have reached agreement on a 3-year contract.
The school board met in special session Thursday morning to ratify the contract, which provides district teachers 1 percent raises this year, next year and through the June 30, 2021.

Big group at League lunch
Some 75 people attended the League of Women Voters Leelanau County holiday potluck luncheon Dec. 5.
In addition to group members, special guests included the county Board of Commissioners and other government officials.

A Leland fourth grader will have her artwork featured on the 2019 visitor passes for Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.
