Janet Sieder Carlsen passed away on December 5, 2018 at the age of 82. She died of complications of Alzheimer’s disease. Her death was peaceful and serene at Angela’s Hospice Center in Livonia, Michigan. She had around the clock care from the staff and her family.

LAKE LEELANAU – Lorraine Joyce Sharnowski, 71, of Lake Leelanau, died Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2018 at her home.

Lorraine was born on April 19, 1947 in Buckley, the daughter of Clifford and Fern (Schuester) LeRoux. On Jan. 6, 1967, in Traverse City, she married Jack D. Sharnowski, who preceded her in death on Feb. 14, 2003.

A celebration is planned for September in Leland for Howard Berridge Tuthill, Jr. who died Wednesday, Dec. 5 in Oak Park Heights, Minn.

He was 88.

County Board meets goals for 2018

The Leelanau County Board of Commissioners appears to have met almost all the goals it set for itself earlier this year.

Notably, commissioners agreed that the county is in an “enviable position” financially in relation to other counties in Michigan; and the county’s new Substance Abuse Prevention Task Force is already being cited as a model for other counties to emulate.

Scott takes blame for failed talks

Glen Lake Superintendent Sander Scott fell on the sword this week, taking the blame for stalled contract talks during Monday’s monthly meeting.

The high school media center was filled to capacity with parents, teachers and retired teachers gathered seeking a resolution to contract talks that have fallen apart.

Interest huge in theatre’s future

There was a full house Tuesday at the Bay Theatre where more than 225 people gathered to discuss the future of the county’s only movie house.

Bahle Enterprises, owned by the Bahle family of Suttons Bay, announced last month the closing of the theatre that has been a center for the arts for more than 70 years.

Village Council meeting rescheduled

The Village Council will hold a special meeting today, Thursday, Dec. 20, at 5 p.m. at the Village Hall, 420 N. Front Street.

G-L teachers/board OK contract

The Glen Lake Board of Education and Glen Lake Federation of Teachers have reached agreement on a 3-year contract.

The school board met in special session Thursday morning to ratify the contract, which provides district teachers 1 percent raises this year, next year and through the June 30, 2021.
