McNew and Sadowski are wed

Sara A. McNew and Gregory John Sadowski exchanged wedding vows on Sept. 2 in Cleveland.

The bride’s brother, Jason Nargis, performed the ceremony and the reception was held at the Renaissance Cleveland Hotel.

Sara, a 2008 graduate of Glen Lake Community Schools, was attended by Katy Sadowski, the groom’s sister. Tim Nargis, brother of the bride, was best man.

Bogue a double winner

Don Bogue of Northport was the grand prize winner last week in the Suttons Bay-Leelanau Rotary Club’s annual Blessings in a Backpack raffle.

Bogue, a retired Methodist pastor and a Rotarian, was the winner of the top prize of $4,800 in the raffle, which benefits Leelanau Christian Neighbors’ Blessings in a Backpack program.

Just 250 tickets were sold at $60 each.

Community choir starts practices

The Leelanau Community Choir, under the director of Jonah Powell, will begin rehearsals next week in preparation for its holiday concerts set for Dec. 1 and 2.

The group will begin weekly rehearsals on Mondays from 7-9 p.m. at the Suttons Bay Congregational Church. 218 W. Madison St.

All voices are welcome and no audition is required.

County women artists plan show in Leland

The Leelanau Women Artists will host a member’s show of paintings, jewelry, fused glass and basketry on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 12 and 13, at the Old Art Building in Leland.

The show will open at 1 p.m., with a reception with artists set for 5-7 p.m. The show will continue Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Old Art Building in Leland this month will host Miriam Pico’s Little Bird School of Song.

The program encourages children and adults to sing, dance, be silly, and play instruments while incorporating educational elements. They’ll learn about music theory, Spanish, and empowered individual creativity.

County musicians play the classics

Classical music and song will fill the air Sunday due in part to six Leelanau County residents.

That half-dozen women and men will be playing in the Benzie Symphony Orchestra (BSO) at 4 p.m. at Benzie Central High School in a first joint concert with the Benzie County Voices.

The Leelanau UnCaged street fair continued to show evidence of growing popularity with easily more than 1,000 people crowding into downtown Northport during the 6th annual event on Saturday.

“There are more people here than I thought would show up on such a chilly day,” said Susan Ager, one of the event’s volunteer organizers.

Work starts on S-B library garden

The Friends of the Suttons Bay- Bingham District Library this week broke ground on a new children’s garden that being planted at the library.

Local contractors include Creative Designscapes of Suttons Bay and Spinniken Lawn and Irrigation.

No taxpayer funds are being used for the $22,000 project.

“We didn’t have a whole lot of worries back in those days,” former Suttons Bay player Gerry Knudsen said. “We had a lot of friends and no phones. You needed 20 cents in your pocket to use the pay phone.”

County may offer tire recycling; new Northport site

Leelanau County’s solid waste recycling programs are picking up steam just as the season is ending for special household hazardous waste (HHW) and electronics recycling collections.

The final HHW and electronics recycling collection of the season will be held Saturday at Cherry Bend Park off Avondale Lane in Elmwood Township near the township hall.

We took a short trip up to the UP, (Ya, hey), and the colors had not changed up there either. We had a great time seeing our girls at Northern Michigan University in Marquette. It is a good school with a very nice small campus.
