Leland nearly done with conceptual design

Progress on behind-the-scenes work needed to begin the school’s $24.6 million construction and renovation project was discussed this week by the Leland Board of Education.

Board members met in special session Monday night to review a conceptual design for the project, which will be followed by more concrete plans which will be used to seek bids for the project in February.

Opponents and supporters of controversial “wedding barn” owner Frank Noverr showed up ready for a fight Monday at the Elmwood Township Board meeting, but the fight never occurred.

A lively discussion over whether Noverr should be charged with violating the township Zoning Ordinance might occur at a special meeting that could be scheduled for next week, however.

Fair time certain in Lake Leelanau

The planning has ended, and anticipation will soon follow suit. The Lake Leelanau Street Fair will kick off at 11 a.m. on Saturday.

The fair serves to gather an eclectic mix of vendors, from artisans to vintners. Also provided will be children’s activities, entertainers and a steady stream of top bands providing live music.

Firefighters remember 9/11

The Glen Lake Fire Department on Tuesday hosted its annual commemoration of 9/11 attacks on the Twin Towers in New York City. The event was planned to remember the sacrifices of 343 firefighters and medics who lost their lives in the attack.

Ansorge to discuss emergency preparedness

The Leland Township Library will host an emergency preparedness workshop at 1:30 p.m. next Thursday, Sept. 20.

Matt Ansorge, county director of emergency management, will discuss how to prepare for winter, including how to develop an emergency plan and supply kit.

A question-and-answer session will follow.

There is no charge.

Astronaut raises funds for library

The Glen Lake Community Library on Monday, Sept. 24, will host a presentation by retired Air Force colonel and astronaut Gregory Johnson.

During the 7 p.m. program, Johnson will describe his experiences as a pilot and astronaut, including his time spent on the International Space Station.

The program, set for 7 p.m. at Eyaawing Museum & Cultural Center in Peshawbestown, will feature a presentation from professor Mathew Fletcher, author of “The Legal History of the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians.”

McCullochs celebrate 60th anniversary

A Suttons Bay couple who met at a Lutheran church in Lansing celebrated their 60th anniversary with family and friends.

David McCulloch and the former Marjorie Garlock met at Emanuel Lutheran Church, where each was baptized. They were married on Sept. 13, 1958, at the church with Pastor Leonard Koeninger officiating.

After a sleepless night he decided that he would desert his post and fellow soldiers and go to her bedside. As he was leaving his barracks, he was apprehended and placed in the stockade.
