Progress on behind-the-scenes work needed to begin the school’s $24.6 million construction and renovation project was discussed this week by the Leland Board of Education.
Board members met in special session Monday night to review a conceptual design for the project, which will be followed by more concrete plans which will be used to seek bids for the project in February.
Suttons Bay Virtual School continues to attract students and make up for falling numbers of students in building classrooms.

Opponents and supporters of controversial “wedding barn” owner Frank Noverr showed up ready for a fight Monday at the Elmwood Township Board meeting, but the fight never occurred.
A lively discussion over whether Noverr should be charged with violating the township Zoning Ordinance might occur at a special meeting that could be scheduled for next week, however.
The planning has ended, and anticipation will soon follow suit. The Lake Leelanau Street Fair will kick off at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
The fair serves to gather an eclectic mix of vendors, from artisans to vintners. Also provided will be children’s activities, entertainers and a steady stream of top bands providing live music.

The Glen Lake Fire Department on Tuesday hosted its annual commemoration of 9/11 attacks on the Twin Towers in New York City. The event was planned to remember the sacrifices of 343 firefighters and medics who lost their lives in the attack.
The Leland Township Library will host an emergency preparedness workshop at 1:30 p.m. next Thursday, Sept. 20.
Matt Ansorge, county director of emergency management, will discuss how to prepare for winter, including how to develop an emergency plan and supply kit.
A question-and-answer session will follow.

The Glen Lake Community Library on Monday, Sept. 24, will host a presentation by retired Air Force colonel and astronaut Gregory Johnson.
During the 7 p.m. program, Johnson will describe his experiences as a pilot and astronaut, including his time spent on the International Space Station.
The Leelanau County Democratic Party will celebrate Indigenous People’s Day on Monday, Oct. 1.
The program, set for 7 p.m. at Eyaawing Museum & Cultural Center in Peshawbestown, will feature a presentation from professor Mathew Fletcher, author of “The Legal History of the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians.”
All are welcome to attend a chili cookoff sponsored on Saturday in Elmwood Township by the Leelanau County Republican Party.
The cookoff will begin at 4 p.m. at the Noverr Farm Barn, 7981 S. Lakeshore Dr.
The Leelanau Early Childhood Development Committee will host a Fine Art Auction on Friday, Sept. 21, at the Leland Lodge.
More than 20 Leelanau County artists have donated original works in various media which will be offered in silent and live auctions during the event set for 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.
A Suttons Bay couple who met at a Lutheran church in Lansing celebrated their 60th anniversary with family and friends.
David McCulloch and the former Marjorie Garlock met at Emanuel Lutheran Church, where each was baptized. They were married on Sept. 13, 1958, at the church with Pastor Leonard Koeninger officiating.
A soldier in a combat zone learned that his wife was desperately ill and not expected to live. He applied for an “emergency leave” but was denied. After a sleepless night he decided that he would desert his post and fellow soldiers and go to her bedside. As he was leaving his barracks, he was apprehended and placed in the stockade.

Historic sites and buildings in Leelanau County will be the focus of a special program set for 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 27, at the Glen Arbor Township Hall.
The Leelanau County Historic Preservation Society will host the program, which will include a historic tour through Leelanau County from historians Christine Byron and Thomas Wilson.
