LAKE LEELANAU – Theresa Florence Schaub, 95, of Lake Leelanau, died Sunday, Sept. 2, 2018 at French Manor Extended Care.
Theresa was born April 3, 1923 in Lake Leelanau, the daughter of Louis E. Schaub and Theresa (Popp) Schaub.
DONA TORBENSON SHEEHAN
CEDAR – Dona Torbenson Sheehan, 75, passed away Saturday, Sept. 1, 2018 at home surrounded by her loving family. Dona was born June 23, 1943, in Lawton, Oklahoma, the daughter of Charles and Thelma “Sally” (Lockery) Torbenson.
DAVID W. “MAC” MCKISSON
NORTHPORT— David West McKisson, 63, of Northport, passed away Monday, August 27, 2018 at his home in Northport, surrounded by his loving family.
David was born July 7, 1955 in Findlay, Ohio, the son of John and Sarah (Sutherland) McKisson. On July 3, 1982 in Leland, he married Susan (Epting) McKisson who survives.
DANIELLE F. MARTINEZ FLOREZ
TRAVERSE CITY – Danielle Frances Martinez Florez, 46, of Traverse City, died Saturday, Sept. 1, 2018 at Munson Medical Center.
Danielle was born March 10, 1972 in Polk County, Florida the daughter of Donald Gordon Hard and Mary Avis (McGrath) Hard. On Nov. 24, 2010 in Peshawbestown she married Jorge Martinez Florez who survives.
G. ADAH ROBERTS
Gertrude Adah Roberts, 98, of Acworth, GA, passed away Thursday, Aug. 15, 2018 in Marietta, GA.
Adah was born Oct. 30, 1919 in Detroit the daughter of Camby and Edith (Faulk) Clarke. On Nov. 3, 1962 in Florida she married Kenneth Luther Roberts who preceded her in death on March 7, 1993.
Joseph W. Baatz
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 15 at St. Philip Neri Catholic Church in Empire for Joseph W. Baatz of Maple City who died on June 10.
He was 70.
Friends will be greeted an hour prior to Mass and a luncheon will follow the service.
Burial will be at Rose Hill Cemetery in Kasson Township.
Sylvia E. Linde-Guback
A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 15 at St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church in Northport for Sylvia E. Linde-Guback of Northport who died July 15, 2018.
She was 78.
Arrangements are with the Martinson Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Leelanau.
Glen Lake installs gun-shooting technology
A new security system with “gunshot detection” technology has been installed at Glen Lake Community School — the first in the state.
The equipment, which cost the district $152,188, is a hybrid of sorts, combining an “indoor active shooter detection system” with a “rapid emergency response system.”
Glen Arbor’s new sign to go dark

No pact for G-L teachers
A mediator may be called in to help Glen Lake teachers and the Board of Education negotiate a contract — something that has proven difficult through eight months of negotiations.
Members of the Glen Lake Federation of Teachers (GLFT) returned to the classroom this week just as their previous contract expired Friday, Aug. 31.
Dams work to keep lake levels
With Lake Leelanau water levels at least half a foot higher than normal, whitewater is pouring out of the Leland Dam and Leelanau County maintenance director Jerry Culman is working hard to manage the flow.
“Everything is saturated. We’ve gone from one extreme to the other,” Culman said.
Supervisors mixed on Ironman
The supervisors of seven townships in Leelanau County that may be asked to host parts of a 56-mile-long Ironman biking event next summer are expressing mixed opinions on the prospect.

Speeding, altercation part of arrests
Two incidents involving alcohol resulted in arrests in the past week by Sheriff’s office deputies.
Sunday evening just before 9 p.m. officers responded to a home in Suttons Bay Township where a disorderly person was reported.
Deputies investigated what they determined was a physical altercation.
Northport contractor finally paid
Work on a Northport Village trail system has been complete for months.
Now that work has been paid for.
What’s up in Northport? Looks like S-B or Leland
Something happened this summer in the Village of Northport, according to residents who have been speaking up at Village Council meetings.
And they didn’t approve.
“We did not want to become another Leland or another Suttons Bay,” said former village president Fred Steffens, who was talking during public comment at the Sept. 6 meeting.
Policy change for lawyerly advice
Northport council members will be given more of a say when legal advice is sought of the village attorney.
And in a related development, the village inched closer to requesting proposals from law firms interested in providing legal counsel.
