Distillery, cidery discussed in Elmwood
Following a public hearing, the Elmwood Township Planning Commission last week recommended approval of a Zoning Ordinance amendment that would allow liquor tasting rooms at distilleries in the township’s agriculture district.
Similar zoning language already exists allowing tasting rooms at the township’s wineries.
Family ties come together
A short drive downstate ended a long journey for a Glen Arbor resident.
Linda Ihme last week met her cousin, Becky Collie, for the first time after connecting with her through ancestry.com.

It appears that things have slowed down a bit. Traffic is such that people can now cross M-22 without taking their own life in their hands. I’m sure the merchants are taking a deep breath now but would not mind if they just had a little reprieve and then the people came back.

Leland Methodist church begins Bible reading program
Leland Community United Methodist Church will begin the fall season with a program called “Community Bible Experience.”
Church members — and anyone interested in the community — are invited to begin the eight-week program that begins at 10 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 16.
Peninsula-wide walk for a cause
A Suttons Bay woman will be walking M-204 over Labor Day weekend to bring attention to another annual walk designed to fight hunger both locally and worldwide.
Linda Miller intends to walk both sides of M-204 — from one side of the county to the other — to bring attention to the 29th annual Leelanau Crop Walk that’s slated for Sunday, Oct. 7.

Yoga offered at Fountain Point
It’s the final morning of Yoga on the Beach at Fountain Point in Lake Leelanau.
Yoga will be offered at 8:30 a.m. at the resort, located at 990 S Lake Leelanau Dr. Suggested donation is $10.
Garden walk for fire dept.
A garden walk is scheduled to raise moneys for the Cedar Area Fire & Rescue (CAFR) equipment fund.
The “Heavenly” Garden Walk will be held Saturday, Sept. 8, at the Ray and Father Ken Stachnik home, 9059 Nelson St. in Cedar.
Admission will be $15 per person. The event is set for noon to 6 p.m. Refreshments and a tour of the Cedar Fire Station will follow.
Carlson starts final year at West Point
Gunnar S. Carlson, a 2015 graduate of Leland Public School, last week began his final year at the U.S. Military Academy, West Point, N.Y.
Seniors at West Point are referred to as “Firsties.” Cadet Carlson is majoring in history. When he is commissioned a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army upon graduation in May 2019, he hopes to become an infantry officer.

3-3:30 p.m. — Heroes of the Storm reenactment of a daring shipwreck rescue at the Maritime Museum, Glen Haven.
‘Quiet’ still the main island draw
Camping on the Manitou islands has changed little despite the advance of technology.
Just ask Matt Schiller from Cincinnati, who camped last week on North Manitou. He returned Friday to the Leland Harbor with fond memories of a place made for breathing deeply and appreciating nature.
“We walked around, hung out on the beach and watched the sunset,” Schiller said.
