About 150 students from Leland, Northport, St. Mary and Suttons Bay high schools converged on the Leelanau County Government Center last Thursday to learn about how the justice system works, as well as a little history about the area. Leelanau County Law Day, as it was tagged, was held in honor of the county’s sesquicentennial celebration.

Walker, Barnett to wed June 22

Laura Walker and Scott Barnett have announced their engagement.

A June 22 wedding is planned at Frog Pond Village in Interlochen.

The bride-elect is the daughter of Marie and Ted Livernois of Elmwood Township and Clary and Laura Walker of Traverse City.

The groom-elect is the son of Larry and Patty Barnett of Clarkston.

Cherryland offers historic book

To celebrate its 75th anniversary, Cherryland Electric Cooperative has published a book about its history.

The 120-page, hard cover book, “Lighting the Way,” is available for $10 and is available at area bookstores and at Cherryland Electric. Proceeds from the book will be donated to area non-profit agencies.

The Leelanau Community Cultural Center at the Old Art Building is hosting a one-day “Leland Air” A Plein Air event from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 25. Artists will spend the day in and around Leland painting images of historic Fishtown, orchards and vineyards, terrain, and beaches.

EDITOR’S NOTE: Many readers will remember Lucille (Baker) Barratt. Raised on the Fred & Grace Baker Farm along Lake Michigan near Pyramid Point, Lucille and her husband Jack spent most of their 69 years together there. Lucille taught for many years in various schoolhouses around the area, and spent summers teaching horsemanship at Camp Kohahna.

Omena bird habitat center volunteer clean-up Saturday

Saturday is volunteer day at the Saving Birds Thru Habitat Discovery Center in Omena.

Join folks at the Habitat Center, 5020 N. Putnam Road, at 10 a.m. to help clear trails, clean gardens and remove invasive plants.

The weather has certainly been the news this past week — snow on Saturday and freezing here and there on Sunday night. Hopefully, everyone’s crops escaped damage. Gale force winds on Saturday night and Sunday made it seem even colder.

Erin Connolly McFadden received her Master of Social Work degree from Grand Valley State University on May 2 at graduation ceremonies at Milliken Auditorium and the Grand Traverse Resort in Traverse City. Erin a 2003 graduate of Northport Public School and a 2007 graduate of Michigan State University graduated Magna Cum Laude. Erin is the daughter of Jeremy and Mike Connolly of Northport.

John Bressette and Mike Alveshire beat Daniel Broome and Tom John in a doubles match Monday playing disc golf at the Herman Park course.

The winners were one-up on Broome and John going into the 18th hole of the best ball (disc) event and both teams parred the final basket.

“We play as often as we can,” said Alvershire of the foursome who live in Peshawbestown.

Farmers Market manager receives certification

David McDonald, of Lake Leelanau, recently became a certified farmers market manager after completing a program offered by the Michigan Farmers Market Association (MIFMA). McDonald is the market coordinator for all six of Leelanau County’s farm markets, as well as the market master for the Suttons Bay, Lake Leelanau and Leland markets.
